Smith brothers lead Baseball to a pair of wins over Presbyterian
CLINTON, SC -- Catawba remained undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference with a pair of wins over host Presbyterian in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. The Indians, ranked 14th in NCAA II, improve to 22-5 overall and 5-0 in the SAC with the 12-7 and 9-3 wins. The Blue Hose fall to 8-19 and 0-5.
In the opener, Catawba used a five-run third inning to grab the early lead. Presbyterian rallied in the fourth with a four spot to take a 7-6 edge. Matt Bodie and Kyle Craven had key doubles in the frame.
Catawba answered right back with four of its own in the fifth. David Thomas drove home three with a bases-loaded double. The Tribe added single runs in the final two innings, the last on a RBI single by Mark Smith.
Mark Smith was 4-for-6 from the plate with three RBI to pace Catawba in the opener. He also pitched an inning and a third of hitless relief. Casey Carlson and Cory Lyda had three hits and one RBI apiece to lead all Blue Hose batters. Catawba’s Tim Smith moved to 6-1 on the year with the win on the mound as he scattered 12 hits over seven and two-thirds innings and fanned eight.
Matt Smith keyed a four-run fourth in game two with a bases-loaded double to give Catawba a 6-1 lead. PC closed the gap to 6-3 in the fifth on RBI singles by Carlson and Craven. The Tribe added a run in the sixth and two insurance runs in the seventh for the final margin.
Matt Smith collected four hits and five RBI for Catawba in the nightcap, while Craven had two hits and one RBI to lead the Blue Hose batters. Freshman Jerry Sands had hits in each game for Catawba to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Thomas had three hits and five RBI in the doubleheader for the Tribe.
Blake Ketner pitched the win for Catawba as he went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Mark Smith and Chad Baker each tossed an inning of shutout relief.
