Smith brothers lead Baseball to a pair of wins over Presbyterian

CLINTON, SC -- Catawba remained undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference with a pair of wins over host Presbyterian in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.  The Indians, ranked 14th in NCAA II, improve to 22-5 overall and 5-0 in the SAC with the 12-7 and 9-3 wins.  The Blue Hose fall to 8-19 and 0-5.
In the opener, Catawba used a five-run third inning to grab the early lead.  Presbyterian rallied in the fourth with a four spot to take a 7-6 edge.  Matt Bodie and Kyle Craven had key doubles in the frame.

Catawba answered right back with four of its own in the fifth.  David Thomas drove home three with a bases-loaded double.  The Tribe added single runs in the final two innings, the last on a RBI single by Mark Smith.

Mark Smith was 4-for-6 from the plate with three RBI to pace Catawba in the opener.  He also pitched an inning and a third of hitless relief.  Casey Carlson and Cory Lyda had three hits and one RBI apiece to lead all Blue Hose batters.  Catawba’s Tim Smith moved to 6-1 on the year with the win on the mound as he scattered 12 hits over seven and two-thirds innings and fanned eight.

Matt Smith keyed a four-run fourth in game two with a bases-loaded double to give Catawba a 6-1 lead.  PC closed the gap to 6-3 in the fifth on RBI singles by Carlson and Craven.  The Tribe added a run in the sixth and two insurance runs in the seventh for the final margin.
