Baseball jumps on PC early to complete weekend sweep
CLINTON, SC -- Catawba completed a weekend sweep of Presbyterian with a 9-1 victory in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex. The Indians, ranked #14 in NCAA II, win for the 16th time in 17 outings to improve to 23-5 overall and 6-0 in the SAC. Presbyterian falls to 8-20 and 0-6, dropping its 13th straight game.Catawba took the lead in the first inning as Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) made the Blue Hose pay for a two-out error as he connected on his fourth home run of the season to put the Tribe up 2-0. Another Presbyterian miscue in the third led to a 5-0 Catawba advantage. Matt Smith (Brown Summitt, NC), singled home a run, Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) plated one with a ground out and Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) brought home the final run of the frame on a single that extended his hitting streak to 19 games.
That would plenty of support for Tribe starter Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC), who surrendered just a single run over six innings. The freshman allowed just six hits with no walks and four strikeouts to improve to 5-0 on the season. The Indians put the game away in the fifth, benefiting from two more PC errors to score four times for a 9-0 advantage.
Kyle Craven (Savannah, GA), who had three hits for the Blue Hose, drove home the lone run for Presbyterian with a single in the sixth. Casey Carlson (Lexington, SC) had doubled to lead off the inning, one of his two hits on the afternoon. The Tribe had just seven hits with two each coming from Matt Smith and David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC). Matt Smith and Davis had two RBI apiece.
