Mitchell ties home run mark as Softball goes 2-3 at FMU TournamentFLORENCE, NC -- Catawba went 2-3 over five games at the Francis Marion Patriot Invitational Softball Tournament over the weekend. The Lady Indians fell to Gannon 5-1 then beat St. Andrews 10-5 on Friday. On Saturday, Catawba lost to #7-ranked USC Upstate 5-1 and to Augusta State 6-3. The Lady Indians closed with an 8-2 win over Fairmont State on Sunday. Catawba is now 11-14 on the year.
Catawba fell behind 4-0 in the first inning against Gannon after a three-run homer by Allison Gerger. Jessie Whitesides drove home the lone Catawba run on a third-inning single. Each team had just five hits in the contest.
The Lady Indians pounded out 11 hits in the win over St. Andrews, including a 4-for-4 performance by Ryann Baker. The four hits tied a school record achieved several times. One of the hits was her fifth homer of the season. Baker totaled three RBI in the 10-5 win. Whitesides had two hits, including her first home run.
A four-run third propelled seventh-ranked Upstate to the win over Catawba. Only two of the five runs against Lindsay Ettinger were earned. Ashlee Rhoades and Hillary Hampton each had two hits for Catawba, who left nine on base.
Catawba grabbed a 3-0 lead on Augusta State in the second inning. Hampton led off the second with a home run and Amanda Mitchell hit a two-run shot later in the frame. It marked her sixth homer of the season which tied a school mark set last season by Lacey Waldroop. Those were two of the three hits by the Lady Indians and Augusta rallied in the sixth on home runs by Amy Dumas and Jennifer Tomlinson.
Whitesides went 3-for-4 in Sunday’s win over Fairmont State. Ettinger scattered five hits to record the complete game win. She allowed one earned run and struck out six. Hampton and Cassie Markham each had two RBI.
Ettinger tossed nearly every inning of the five games, allowing 32 hits over 33 and a third innings. She recorded 20 strikeouts. Whitesides went 7-for-16 at the plate with four RBI. Baker had six hits in the five games and Hampton five. All three had home runs.
