Rimer and Sands pace Baseball to 12-6 win over St. Andrews
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College, ranked 10th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll, picked up a 12-6 win over visiting St. Andrews on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians improve their mark to 24-5 overall while the Knights fall to 13-13.
Catawba got on the board early as Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) blasted a three-run shot in the first. Also in the inning, Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) smacked a two-out single to center sending his hit streak to 20 consecutive games. Sands would pick up a pair of RBI with his two-out HR in the third giving the Tribe a 5-0 lead.
Two Knights errors in the fourth led to a pair of runs for Catawba, Matt Smith (Brown Summit, NC) picked up a RBI single in the frame. St. Andrews would get on the board in the sixth as Brad Smith (Riegalwood, NC) picked up a base hit bringing in Greg Wrape (Hamlet, NC) and Cliff Allred (Franklinville, NC).
The Indians would put up a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh to regain control with a Matt Smith RBI-double and a sacrifice fly from Sands. Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) belted a two-run double in the seventh. SAPC would respond with two on pinch-hitter Ritchie Priest’s (Elizabethtown, PA) and Brad Smith’s RBI-singles in the eighth. A balk and a wild pitch led to a pair of runs in the ninth, but the Tribe shut the door to preserve the win.
Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) picked up the win tossing two innings allowing three hits while fanning three. Anthony Mehling (Pottsville, PA) took the loss for the Knights as he was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits in his four innings of work.
