Lacrosse drops 12-5 decision at Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Mars Hill defeated visiting Catawba 12-5 in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday night at Meares Stadium. The Lions improve to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the DSC, while Catawba falls to 2-4 and 2-1.
After being tied at 1-1 for most of the first quarter, Andrew Chapman (Ontario, Canada) gave Mars Hill a 2-1 lead with 4:16 left in the first stanza and the Lions never looked back. Mars Hill scored one additional goal in the first quarter before scoring four unanswered goals in the seconds frame to take a commanding 7-1 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Mars Hill extended its advantage to 9-2 after the third period and then the teams battled to a 3-3 tie in the fourth quarter to make the final tally 12-5. The Lions out-shot Catawba 41-to-26. Mars Hill won the ground ball battle 67-to-56 and took 15-of-21 face-off attempts.
Chapman led all scorers with four goals followed by Brad Campbell (Middleton, WI) who added three scores. Vincent Giganti (Damascus, MD) recorded a pair of goals in the win. Matt Holthaus (Churchville, MD) played all 60 minutes in goal for MHC and made 11 saves. Mark Van Hoever (Pleasant Garden, NC) led Catawba with a goal and two assists. Ben Huber (Westminster, MD) played the entire game in the net for the Indians and made 16 saves.
