Baseball defeats Newberry 15-4; Sands' streak to 24 games
SALISBURY, NC – Freshman Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) went 4-for-5 with a home run propelling Catawba College to a 15-4 win over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. Sands pushes his hitting streak to 24 games as the 10th-ranked Indians improve to 28-5 overall, 9-0 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 6-24-1 and 0-9.
Newberry struck in the first as Joel Keefe (Andover, MA) singled in Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, SC). Catawba responded with three in the second as Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) picked up a RBI single, Noah Johnson (Huntersville, NC) drew a bases-loaded walk and Matt Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) reached on a fielder’s choice.
Sands blasted a solo-HR in the third to give Catawba a 4-1 lead, but Newberry’s Matt Webb (Cheraw, SC) would cut the deficit in half with his solo blast in the fourth. A long ball from Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) and a Baker sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Catawba a four run advantage before adding a three spot in the sixth on Mark Smith’s two-run double and Sands’ RBI two-bagger.
Newberry would add two in the seventh as Webb picked up a RBI double with Levi Salters (Vincennes, IN) scoring on a Catawba error. Matt Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) would add a two-run single, part of four-run seventh for Catawba. Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) sent a solo homerun to left in the eighth to close things out.
For Newberry, Keefe went 4-for-5 with a RBI. Matt Smith went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Lefko had a pair of hits and two RBI for Catawba. Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) picked up his sixth win of the season allowing two runs in five and two-thirds innings. Will Folk (Charleston, SC) took the loss facing just five batters in the second before turning things over to the bullpen.
