Whitesides homers twice as Softball sweeps Limestone
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept both ends of a doubleheader from visiting Limestone in softball action on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 10-2 and 3-0, improving to 14-15 on the season. Limestone falls to 13-16.
Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) earned both wins on the mound. The junior allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts in the opener and tossed a three-hit shutout in the second game. On offense, Catawba connected on four homeruns to increase the season total to 20, breaking the old record of 18 in a season set last year.
Freshman Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) homered in each game for Catawba, but it was Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC), who sparked the offense in the opener. She followed Ryann Baker’s (Rockwell, NC) RBI-double in the opening frame with a two-run shot to help the Lady Indians to a 4-0 lead after an inning.
Whitesides hit a solo home run in the second and Catawba took a 5-2 edge to the sixth when Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) blasted a three-run homer. Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) doubled home Hampton with a run to end the contest three batters later.
Hampton and Whitesides each had three hits and two RBI in the opener, while Rhoades picked up three RBI on one swing. Candice Evans (Lexington, SC) had a pair of hits and drove in a run for Limestone.
Whitesides homered in the first inning of the second game to stake Catawba to a lead. Baker singled and scored on a two-out error in the fourth, while Hampton doubled in the sixth and scored on a single by White to cap the scoring. Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL) had two hits in the nightcap for the Lady Indians.
