Ettinger tosses pair of shutouts as Softball eqauls record with 8th straight win

SALISBURY, NC – Junior Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) tossed a pair of shutouts and freshman Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) collected four hits as Catawba swept both ends of a doubleheader from visiting Mount Olive in softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Lady Indians won by the scores of 6-0 and 3-0 in improving to 20-15 and equaling a school record with their eighth straight win.  The Trojans fell to 19-22.Catawba jumped on top with three runs in the first inning of game one.  Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL) and Whitesides opened with singles then Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) produced the first run with a one-out RBI single.  Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) followed with a sacrifice fly and Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) singled home the final run.

Markham and White added solo home runs in the second and third innings to stretch the lead to 5-0.  That was more than enough support for Ettinger, who allowed just four singles and struck out nine.  Erin Wilson (Moyock, NC) had two of the hits for Mount Olive, while Markham had three hits for Catawba.

Ettinger and Shauna Cowdrey (Alta Loma, CA) hooked up in a pitchers duel in second game as the contest was scoreless entering the fifth.  Catawba had just one hit through four innings, but Markham singled to center with two outs and Whitesides connected on a two-run homer to put the Lady Indians on top 2-0.

Ettinger would make it hold up as she posted her third shutout in four games, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts.  It marked the sixth perfect sheet of the season for the junior, who tied her own record for shutouts in a season and improved to 19-11 on the year.

The final run came when Baker stole home in the sixth.  Whitesides had two hits in the nightcap for the Lady Indians, including a third-inning triple.  She had a cycle for the doubleheader as she was four-for-six in the two games.  Wilson also had single in game two for the Trojans, marking her third hit of the day.
