#4 Baseball knocks off Pfeiffer 5-3
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba freshman Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) went 3-for-3 with a solo home run as the fourth-ranked Indians defeated Pfeiffer 5-3 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. With the win, the Indians jump to 31-6 overall. The Falcons fall to 15-25.
Sands led off the second inning with his solo blast to put the Tribe up 1-0. Pfeiffer responded in the third as Blake Jordan (Haw River, NC) tied the contest with his RBI single. A three run fourth would give Catawba the lead for good. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) roped a RBI double, Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC) would single in Sands and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Falcons would cut the deficit to one in the fifth as a pair of sacrifice flies from Bryan Braxton (Hillsborough, NC) and Kyle Pugh (Asheboro, NC) cut the Tribe lead to 4-3, but Sands’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth would give the Indians the final margin of 5-3.
Paul Link (Cleveland, NC) give up three runs in five innings to pick up the win. Falcon starter Richard Allred (Snow Camp, NC) was roughed up for four runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) picked up his sixth save of the season. The Falcons out-hit Catawba 13-11 and stranded 15 runners on base.
