#4 Baseball drops series finale 6-2 to #28 Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC – Tusculum College used four home runs en route to a 6-2 win over Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The 28th-ranked Pioneers salvage the series finale improving to 25-12-1 overall and 11-4 in the SAC. The 4th-ranked Indians fall to 33-7 and 13-2.
Both teams traded a run in the second inning as Josh Wolff (Louisville, KY) smacked a RBI-double while Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) blasted a solo-HR in the bottom half for Catawba. The Pioneers would put two on the board in the third on back-to-back HR’s from Skip Talarek (Great Falls, VA) and Greg Stotser (Columbus, GA) giving TC a 3-1 lead.
In the seventh, both teams would trade a run once again as TC’s Matt Riggs (Dayton, TN) lifted a solo-HR to left while Catawba’s Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) countered with a solo blast to center. Tusculum would add insurance on a two-run shot from Adam Beacham (Atlanta, GA) in the eighth securing the Pioneers 6-2 win.
Ben Swaggerty (Knoxville, TN ) picked up the win in relief tossing two and one-thirds innings of one hit ball. Alex Fairweather (Lenior, NC) suffered the loss for the Tribe allowing three runs on four hits in five innings of work. Catawba currently holds a one-game lead in the SAC over Carson-Newman heading into next weekend’s series at the Eagles.
