Softball earns split with UNC-PembrokeSALISBURY, NC – Catawba and visiting UNC-Pembroke split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Braves took the opener 2-1 while the Lady Indians earned a 4-3 win in the nightcap. UNCP moves to 21-26 on the season. Catawba sends their record to 23-16.
In the opener, UNC-Pembroke struck in the first as Meredith Veglia (Putnam Valley, NY) brought in Danielle Peters (Vass, NC) with her RBI-single. Catawba responded with a run in the second as Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) smashed a solo-HR to left, setting a new school-record with her seventh on the year. The Lady Braves took advantage of a Lady Indian error in the third as Jenny White (Winston-Salem, NC) would come around to score the eventual game winner.
Game two saw the Tribe strike first with Baker scoring an unearned run off of a UNCP miscue. The Lady Braves took a 2-1 lead as Wendi Cochran (Charlotte, NC) belted a two-run shot to left field in the third. A RBI-double from Peters gave UNCP a two-run cushion in the fourth before Catawba put a pair of runs up in the bottom of the frame.
Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) led off the fourth with a triple to right, later scoring on another Lady Brave error, while Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL) delivered a RBI-single to left tying the contest at three. In the fifth, Catawba would take the lead for good with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) scoring Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) from third.
Candace Evans (Selma, NC) earned the win in the opener with a one run on five hit performance for the complete game. Lindsey Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) gave up two runs on seven hits in the loss. Ettinger would bounce back for the complete game win in the nightcap allowing three runs on seven hits. Laura Goldstein (Otto, NC) allowed four runs on 11 hits in the loss.
