Softball earns split with UNC-PembrokeSALISBURY, NC – Catawba and visiting UNC-Pembroke split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Braves took the opener 2-1 while the Lady Indians earned a 4-3 win in the nightcap. UNCP moves to 21-26 on the season. Catawba sends their record to 23-16.
In the opener, UNC-Pembroke struck in the first as Meredith Veglia (Putnam Valley, NY) brought in Danielle Peters (Vass, NC) with her RBI-single. Catawba responded with a run in the second as Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) smashed a solo-HR to left, setting a new school-record with her seventh on the year. The Lady Braves took advantage of a Lady Indian error in the third as Jenny White (Winston-Salem, NC) would come around to score the eventual game winner.
Game two saw the Tribe strike first with Baker scoring an unearned run off of a UNCP miscue. The Lady Braves took a 2-1 lead as Wendi Cochran (Charlotte, NC) belted a two-run shot to left field in the third. A RBI-double from Peters gave UNCP a two-run cushion in the fourth before Catawba put a pair of runs up in the bottom of the frame.
Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) led off the fourth with a triple to right, later scoring on another Lady Brave error, while Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL) delivered a RBI-single to left tying the contest at three. In the fifth, Catawba would take the lead for good with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly from Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) scoring Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) from third.
Candace Evans (Selma, NC) earned the win in the opener with a one run on five hit performance for the complete game. Lindsey Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) gave up two runs on seven hits in the loss.
