Sands picks up Player of Week honor; Baseball stays 4th in rankings
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba freshman outfielder Jerry Sands, of Clayton, NC, and Mars Hill junior pitcher Charlie Harrison have been named the South Atlantic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week. It was announced by the league office on Monday. It marks the first honor this season for either player.
Sands, a former standout at Smithfield-Selma High School, hit .538 for the week as the No.4 Indians won three of four games and took over first place in the SAC. After having his 25-game hitting streak snapped last Sunday at Lenoir-Rhyne, Sands picked up hits in all four games this week. He had three hits in a 5-3 win over Pfeiffer, including a home run. Sands next added two hits and a homerun in the opener against Tusculum. For the week, he had three home runs and seven RBI, while scoring six runs. On the season, Sands is hitting .408 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI.
Harrison picked up one win and one save this past week. Harrison pitched in relief to obtain a win against Carson-Newman in extra innings and then picked up a save against West Virginia Wesleyan. The right-hander threw four innings in relief and did not allow a runs on two hits. Harrison struck out six batters while walking none.
The SAC Players of the Week are selected by a vote of the eight sports information directors in the league.
