Davis belts four home runs as Baseball sweeps doubleheader at Barton

WILSON, NC -- Catawba senior Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) became the Tribe’s all-time home run leader as the Indians swept a doubleheader from host Barton on Tuesday afternoon at Fleming Stadium.  The fourth-ranked Tribe won by the scores of 9-4 and 12-5 in improving to 35-7 and winning for the 28th time in 31 games.  The Bulldogs fall to 24-17.
David Trexler had set the school mark of 45 career home runs in 1999.  That year he hit a record 24 in one season, including a pair of three homer games in early April.  Davis broke the record in the same fashion.  After connecting for a homer in the first game for the 44th in his career, the senior swatted three in the nightcap to match another of Trexler’s records.

Davis hit a solo home run in the second inning of the opener, but it was a four-run third that broke the game open.  David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC), who enjoyed a 4-for-5 outing in game one, led off the inning with a double and scored on a double by Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC).  Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) singled him home, while Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC), with a triple, and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) had two-out RBI hits.

Barton got two runs back in its third on a two-run homer by Will Walmsley (Lexington, NC), but the Tribe put up a two spot in both the fourth and fifth innings to go up 9-2.  Matt Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) went the distance on the mound, scattering 11 hits and allowing four runs, two earned.

Davis highlighted the nightcap.  He connected on a three-run homer in the first inning to stake Catawba to a lead and when Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) hit a three-run shot in the second the Tribe led 6-0.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the second and once in the fourth to pull within 6-3 then Davis connected for his record-breaking homer to lead off the fifth.  The Tribe tacked on three more in the frame on a bases-clearing double by Matt Smith.  Davis struck again in the sixth on a two-run shot.

Davis was a perfect 4-for-4 in the second game with six RBI.  Matt and Mark Smith each had two hits and three RBI.  Walmsley, who had three hits in the opener, had two hits for the Bulldogs.  Kevin Brosseau (Winooski, VT) had two hits in each game for Barton.  Paul Link (Salisbury, NC) allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings to earn the win for the Indians.
