Softball falls twice at Wingate

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba dropped both ends of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Wingate University softball facility.  The Lady Indians fell 4-3 in eight innings in the opener and lost 14-8 in the second game.  The Bulldogs improve to 35-7 overall and 6-2 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 23-18 and 6-2.
Catawba battled into extra innings in the opener before Wingate won the contest on a one-out double by Megan McPhail (Wade, NC).  Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) staked Catawba to a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the third and Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) pushed the edge to 3-1 in the fourth as she singled home Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC), who led off the frame with a doubled.

Wingate tied the game in the fifth on a two-out, two-run home run by Sarah Carleton (Powhatan, VA).  The game remained deadlocked until the eight when McPhail delivered her game-winning hit.  Hallie Pettigrew (Uniontown, OH) and Courtney Wagner (Myrtle Beach, SC) each had three hits for Wingate, while the Lady Indians had just four hits in the game.

Hampton gave Catawba the early lead in the second game with a three-run blast in the first inning.  Wingate would strike for three in the second with the last two coming on a two-out double by Pettigrew.

The Lady Indians went back on top in the third when Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL) capped a three-run inning with a two-run double.  Catawba fell behind 7-6, but rallied to lead 8-6 in the fifth after a sacrifice fly from Baker.  Carleton would put the Bulldogs up for good with a two-run homer in the Wingate fifth.

Markham had three hits in the nightcap for Catawba, while Whitesides, Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC), Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) and Jess Hull (Deptford, NJ) each collected two hits.  Pettigrew had another big game for Wingate with four hits, while Heather Winchester (Waxhaw, NC) had three hits and five RBI.
