Baseball keeps SAC lead with Sunday win at C-NJEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Fourth-ranked Catawba Indians scored twice in the first inning and went on to a 7-2 win over 30th-ranked Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. With the win, the Indians improve their record to 37-8 overall and maintain their lead in the SAC with a 15-3 record. Carson-Newman falls to 28-17 and 13-5.
The Indians established momentum early as Mark Smith (Browns Summit, NC) hit a two-run homerun to right field in the top of the first inning. The Eagles would cut the lead in half in the third inning when Brandon Burchfield (Maryville, TN) singled to score Langdon Potts (Jefferson City, TN). Catawba would once again play long ball in the fifth inning as Noah Johnson (Huntersville, NC) hit his first homerun of the season to right field. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC), Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) all hit doubles for Catawba in a two-run sixth as the Indians extended their lead to 5-1.
The Eagles’ final run would come in the sixth when Derrick Calkin (Maryville, TN) scored on an infield error by the Indians. Catawba would ice the win in the seventh when they would add two more runs. Lefko led Catawba with three hits, while David and Sands each had two. Freshman hurler Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) picked up his eighth win of the season for Catawba as he pitched five and one-third innings, scattering five hits with two strikeouts. Relievers Matt Smith (Browns Summit, NC) and Zach Evans (Greensboro, NC) completed the game in relief and combined to strikeout seven C-N batters. #####
