Sufficool wins deciding point as Men's Tennis downs Tusculum 5-4
GREENEVILLE, TN -- In a match that went to the wire, Catawba downed No. 37 Tusculum 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference action held Monday at the Nichols Tennis Complex. With the win, Catawba moves to 17-5 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. Tusculum slips to 11-6 and 4-2.
Catawba held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play and split six singles matches to take the win. Tusculum held a 4-3 lead in singles, but a win by Drew Ramsey at #6 tied the match and Andrew Sufficool scored the deciding point when he won in three sets at #5.
Tusculum’s lone doubles victory came at the No. 1 position, where Carlos Garcia and Sergio Espinosa defeated Jose Velazquez and Ramsey 8-4. The Catawba duo of Geoff Fouad and Shahin Soltan battled out a 9-8 victory over Antonio Oliver and Leo Guaycurus at the No. 2 slot, while Sufficool and Jonathan Hack downed Hunter Beal and Nic Janssen 8-4 in the third position.
In singles action, Catawba claimed wins at the No. 1, 5, and 6 positions. Velazquez defeated Espinosa 6-3, 6-4 in the top slot. Sufficool went three sets to down Beal 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5, and Ramsey prevailed over Janssen 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
Antonio Oliver, Garcia, and Julien Jacob claimed singles victories for Tusculum. Oliver battled three sets with Soltan before taking a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win at No. 2. Garcia defeated Hack 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot, and Jacob downed Fouad 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth position.
