Softball drops pair of one-run games to #17 Lenoir-RhyneHICKORY, NC -– Catawba dropped a pair of one run games at 17th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field. The Lady Indians fell by the scores of 1-0 in eight innings and 3-2 in the nightcap. Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 42-8-1 overall and 10-2 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 24-21 and 7-5.
Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) and Casey Hanes (Richmond, VA) pitched to a scoreless draw through regulation innings with Ettinger surrendering six hits and Hanes five. Catawba failed to score in its eighth and Angela Beard (Hickory, NC) delivered a two-out hit for the Bears to plate the winning run.
It marked the third hit in the game for Beard. Leah Krohn (Taylorsville, NC) had two hits for the Bears. Hanes posted 11 strikeouts while Ettinger fanned seven.
L-R jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning of game two. Brooke Starnes (Conover, NC) doubled home the first run and Beard delivered a RBI single. Catawba tied it on back-to-back home runs by Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) and Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) in the top of the fourth.
Taylor Queen (Conover, NC) broke the 2-2 tie with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. Queen had two hits and scored two runs to lead L-R offensively. Beard also had two hits. Jess Hull (Deptford, NJ) had the only hit for Catawba on a fifth-inning double.
Meredith O'Connor (Charlotte, NC) allowed just three hits struck out 10 batters. Ettinger allowed seven hits and had five strikeouts.
