Baseball falls twice at Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, NC -– Paul Buhrow tossed a one-hitter in game one to help Mount Olive to a doubleheader sweep of fourth-ranked Catawba in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Scarborough Field. The Trojans won by the scores of 3-1 and 5-1 to improve to 33-11 overall. Catawba falls to 37-10.

Buhrow, who faced the minimum number of batters through the first five innings, struck out six and walked none, retiring the side in order in five of the seven innings. The Trojans completed the sweep as Daniel Wood allowed six hits in six innings and a Catawba error ignited a four-run third inning as the Trojans extended their winning streak to 12 games.

Mount Olive took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second of the opener as Dustin Richardson led off with a double and eventually scored with two outs when Catawba committed an error on an attempted force play at second. Richardson drove in a run in the third inning with a two-out line single up the middle, scoring Stephen Nordan.

Jimbo Davis led off the top of the second with a clean single through the left side for the Indians’ only hit of the game. Buhrow struck out the next batter and the Trojans turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Catawba got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth without benefit of a hit as Nick Lefko was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third when Ryan Query reached on an infield error. After Buhrow struck out the next batter, Lefko scored on David Thomas’ sacrifice fly to left to pull the Indians within 2-1. Anthony Williams robbed Jerry Sands of a base hit and prevented further damage in the inning, making a diving stop on a sharp grounder up the middle and flipping to shortstop David Cooper on the bag for the force out to end the inning.

Williams provided an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, lining a two-out double down the left field line on a 3-2 pitch to plate Graham Wooten, who led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on Richardson’s ground out. Buhrow (2-2) retired the side in order in the top of the seventh on a ground out to short and back-to-back strikeouts.

In the second game, Mount Olive broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as Kyle Curtis led off with a double, Williams followed with a walk and both runners scored when the throw to first on Cooper’s bunt single went into foul territory down the right field line. Cooper advanced to third and scored on Lance Martin’s sacrifice fly to extend the Trojans’ lead to 3-0. Richardson capped the four-run inning with an RBI single. Wood (4-1) held Catawba scoreless on four hits through five innings before the Indians pushed a run across the plate in the top of the sixth. Mark Smith and Davis led off the inning with back-to-back singles to left and Smith advanced to third on a fly out.

The Trojans had a chance to get out of the inning on a potential double play ball, but an error kept the inning alive and allowed Smith to score to cut the Trojans’ lead to 4-1. Catawba had the tying run at the plate with one out, but Wood got out of the inning on a fly out and a strikeout. Wood finished with three strikeouts and was aided by two double plays. Donald Huff pitched the seventh to seal the win. #####
