Lacrosse Drops Regular-season Finale at Wingate

WINGATE, NC -- Wingate scored 10 second quarter goals en route to a 21-5 victory over visiting Catawba in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. With the triumph, the Bulldogs improves to 9-4 overall and 7-2 in the DSC. Catawba falls to 3-9 overall and 3-6 in the DSC.

The Bulldogs led 4-1 after the first quarter of play. Wingate exploded for 10 goals in the second stanza to take a 14-3 lead at intermission. Bulldog freshman attack man Dan Leber (Orlando, FL) scored four goals in the second quarter to lead the Wingate offense. Leber, Kyle Costello (Wilmington, NC) and Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, BC, CANADA) shared the team lead with four goals each on Friday. Both Costello and Leber dished out two assists each. Costello leads the DSC with 32 assists on the season. Twelve different Bulldogs contributed at least one point Friday. Defender Michael Watson (Wilmington, NC) scored the first goal of his Bulldog career Friday, opening the scoring for the hosts at the 10:16 mark of the first quarter. Wingate never trailed, building its lead to 17 goals late in the fourth quarter. David Olliver (Charlotte, NC) tallied the second of his two goals to put the hosts up 21-4 with 2:25 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Catawba senior Matt Riley (Baltimore, MD) led the Indians with two goals and two assists. Freshman Mark Van Hoever (Pleasant Garden, NC) contributed two goals for the visitors. Van Hoever was this week’s DSC offensive Player of the Week. Wingate outshot Catawba 41-37. Bulldog freshman goalkeeper Evan Watts (Winston-Salem, NC) played the first half, recording seven saves. Sophomore netminder David Southers (Manassas, VA) played most of the second half, also notching seven saves. Southers allowed one goal. Freshman goalkeeper Chad Watson (Cary, NC) played the final five minutes for the hosts, yielding one goal to the Indians. Three Catawba goalkeepers combined to record eight saves. #####
