Softball uses long ball to sweep Mars HillMARS HILL, NC -- Catawba College swept Mars Hill in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at Ponder Park on Friday afternoon. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 6-4 and 10-2 to improve to 26-21 overall and 9-5 in the SAC. Mars Hill fell to 19-34 and 3-11.
After trailing 3-0 going into the fourth inning, Catawba scored six unanswered runs to pull off the victory in the opener. The Lions scored all three of their runs in the third frame when Katie Bryden (BC, Canada) crossed the plate on a fielder's choice and then Jenna Pender (Hanahan, SC) singled up the middle to plate Tiara Mitchell (North Charleston, SC) and Ashley Harber (Goose Creek, SC).
Catawba scored its first two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Amanda Mitchell (Huntington, MD). The Lady Indians tied the game in the fifth when Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) singled to drive in Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC). Catawba took the lead in the sixth when Mitchell connected on her second two-run homerun of the game.
Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to give Catawba a 6-3 advantage. Jessica Valentine (Frederick, MD) singled to plate Pender in the seventh with two outs, but that was as close as the Lions could get.
Mitchell was 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead the Indians at the plate. Whitesides was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) threw a complete game to pick up the win (24-17) for the Lady Indians. Valentine was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI to lead MHC. Pender and Harber each had two hits for the Lions. Katie Blankenship (Candler, NC) took the loss (7-11) for MHC on the mound throwing five innings.
In game two, Catawba led 1-0 entering the third when Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) hit a three-run homer to extend the Indians advantage to 4-0. The Lady Lions got on the board in the fifth frame when Mitchell hit a solo homerun.
Catawba then exploded for five runs in the seventh to seal the win. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homerun from Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ) and a solo homerun by Rhoades. Bryden made the final score 10-2 hitting a lead-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh.
White and Mehl each recorded three RBI to lead Catawba. Rhoades and Mitchell tallied three hits apiece in the win. Ettinger threw another complete game to pick up her 25th win on the season. Mitchell had two hits to pace Mars Hill, while Bryden was 1-for-3 with the solo homerun. Lyn Loomis (Ocean Isle, NC) took the loss (4-9) for the Lady Lions on the mound.
