Softball equals win record in sweep of PfeifferSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept visiting Pfeiffer in a softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 15-11 and 7-3. Catawba improves to 28-21 overall and equals the school mark for wins in a season. The Lady Falcons fall to 16-35.Ryann Baker (Rockwell, NC) and Amanda Mitchell (Huntingtown, MD) each homered in their first two at bats to stake Catawba to a 12-0 lead in the opener. Ashlee Rhoades (China Grove, NC) had a two-run double to open the scoring in the first and Baker followed with her first homer for a 4-0 lead. Mitchell capped the opening inning with a solo shot.
Catawba exploded for seven runs in the second with Baker and Mitchell each connecting on three-run homeruns for their 11th and 10th round-trippers of the season, respectively. Erin Furness (Greenville, NC) and Martina Bullard (Goodwin, NC) each had RBI in the third as the Lady Falcons plated a pair of unearned runs.
Pfeiffer closed the gap in the fourth with six hits and benefited from three Catawba errors. Tiffany Allen’s (Franklin, NC) two-run single cut the deficit to 12-7 and chased Aileen Thomson (Burlington, VT), who began the inning in relief. Lindsay Ettinger (Pasadena, MD) returned to the mound and was greeted by a three-run homer from Crystal Poe (Greensboro, NC) that made the score 12-10.
The Lady Indians got three runs back in their fourth as Jacqueline White (Mt. Ulla, NC) scored on a wild pitch and Jess Hull (Deptford, NJ) and Jessie Whitesides (Yadkinville, NC) delivered RBI. Furness homered for Pfeiffer in the fifth for the final margin.
Baker and Whitesides each had three hits for Catawba in the opener with Whitesides hitting two doubles. Baker added five RBI and Mitchell had four RBI. Furness and Sarah Moore (Reidsville, NC) had three hits for the Lady Falcons. Furness and Poe each had three RBI.
Baker delivered a sacrifice fly in the first inning of game two as Catawba went up 1-0. Pfeiffer tied the game in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Jody McCurdy (Mt. Crawford, VA), but Catawba scored four in its fourth to take control.
Hillary Hampton (Salisbury, NC) hit a solo homerun with one-out in the fourth, while Jenn Mehl (West Creek, NJ), Cassie Markham (New Port Richey, FL) and Whitesides all singled in runs. The Lady Falcons got two runs in the sixth on a homer by Furness, but Baker singled home a run and a second scored on an error in the Catawba sixth for the 7-3 final.
White had three hits in the nightcap, setting a Catawba record with three doubles in a game. Whitesides and Markham each had two hits. Ettinger allowed only five hits in picking up her second win of the afternoon and improved to 27-17.
