Men's Tennis drops 5-4 decision to Mars Hill in SAC Tournament
SALISBURY, NC -- Mars Hill defeated host Catawba 5-4 in an opening round match of the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Johnson Tennis Center. The Lions improve to 9-9 and advance to a Friday semifinal to be held at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. Catawba falls to 18-6.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead after doubles with a key 9-8 win at #1 as Diego Rodriguez and John Allen defeated the Catawba team of Jose Velazquez and Drew Ramsey. Mars Hill picked up singles wins by Rodriquez at #1 and Allen at #2, while the Indians claimed wins by Geoff Fouad at #4, Andrew Sufficool at #5 and Ramsey at #6 to even the match at 4-4.
The match was decided at the #3 position between Mars Hill’s Oscar Gomez and Catawba’s Jonathan Hack. Hack battled back from a 5-3 deficit to win the second set in a tie-breaker, but Gomez took the third set tie-breaker for the deciding point.
