Lacrosse Ends Season with Tournament Loss at Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Wingate attack man Chris Manwaring (Vancouver, BC, CANADA) scored a team-high four goals to lead the Bulldogs to an 18-8 win over visiting Catawba in a first round game of the 2006 Deep South Conference lacrosse tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.
Wingate improves to 10-4 overall and advances to a Friday semifinal held at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, NC. The Indians end their season at 3-10. Manwaring and Kyle Costello (Wilmington, NC) scored four goals each for the Bulldogs. Costello added three assists, while Manwaring had one. Wingate led 7-3 at intermission with Manwaring setting the pace with two goals. The Bulldogs outscored the Indians 8-2 in the pivotal third quarter, giving the hosts a 15-5 advantage. Manwaring had two goals in the third frame. Costello gave the Bulldogs additional insurance, as he scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter.
Catawba matched Wingate in the fourth quarter, as the Indians and Bulldogs were 3-3 in the final 15 minutes of play. Senior attack man Randall Worthington (Churchville, MD) led Catawba with three goals on the afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Dan Pashley (Philadelphia, PA) also notched a goal and an assist for the Indians. Freshmen goalkeeper Evan Watts (Winston-Salem, NC) allowed six goals and saved eight of the Indian’s shots. Sophomore Ben Huber (Westminster, Md.) recorded seven saves for Catawba. #####
