Baseball sweeps SAC post-season awards

ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba College, which shared the league regular-season title with Tusculum and has been nationally ranked for much of the season, swept the South Atlantic Conference’s top baseball awards, the league announced on Wednesday. Matt Smith (Brown Summitt, NC), who led the conference with a .405 batting average and a league-high 27 doubles, was named Player of the Year, while Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC), who was 12-1 with a 3.28 ERA was named Pitcher of the Year. Jerry Sands (Smithfield, NC), who had a 25-game hitting streak during the season, was named Freshman of the Year. Catawba College coach Jim Gantt, who guided the Indians to a 17-4 conference record and 40-11 overall, was named Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.

In total, eight Indians earned all-league honors. Joining, Sands, Matt and Tim Smith on the first team was Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC), David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) and Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC). Second team honors went to Alex Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) and Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC).

Matt Smith has totaled 75 hits, third on the team, and scored 62 runs, which is second on the squad. He has three triples and three homers and has driven in 48 runs. The senior has started 48 of his 49 games, seeing most of his action behind the plate. He has made just four errors on the season.

Tim Smith, a sophomore, set a Catawba record with 12 wins on the year. He has logged just over 82 innings and has allowed 83 hits with 22 walks and 63 strikeouts. Sands has played in all 51 games in his first season and leads the team with 14 homeruns and 58 RBI. He has a .387 average and has added 15 doubles. He also has 11 outfield assists.

Mark Smith leads the team with 83 hits and has a .397 average. He ranks second on the team with 56 RBI and has connected for eight homeruns and 16 doubles. The senior is a perfect 12-for-12 in stolen bases.

Thomas, a sophomore, is hitting .399, but batted .476 in league games with five homers and 27 RBI. On the season, he has nine homeruns and 44 RBI. He has scored a team-high 48 runs and leads the squad with 23 stolen bases.

Davis came on strong the final weeks of the season and is hitting .329. He ranks second on the team with 13 homeruns and has 55 RBI. He holds several Catawba career mark, including homers and RBI.

Fairweather, a freshman hurler, has posted an 8-2 record and a 3.13 ERA. In 69 innings, he has walked just 19 batters and has recorded 60 strikeouts. He won five of his seven league starts. Rimer has a .307 average in his senior season and is third on the team with 11 homers. The first baseman has collected 52 RBI and has 13 doubles. He has also drawn a team-high 29 walks.
