Women's Basketball rallies to beat Queens

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College rallied in the final half to earn a 70-65 win over visiting Queens in women’s basketball action on Saturday night at Goodman Gym. The win was the 17th straight at home for the Lady Indians as they improve to 7-1. Queens falls to 1-5. The teams traded the lead 15 times in the opening half with the biggest lead being a five-point edge by Catawba at 27-22 with three minutes left in the half. Catawba’s top two scorers, Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) and Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) were saddled with two early fouls and combined for only eight points. The Lady Indians bench kept Catawba tied, scoring 18 of the teams 30 first half points. Freshman Julie Kaufman (Damascus, MD) had six of the points to lead the way. Queens quickly took the control in the final half, racing to a 41-34 lead in the opening four minutes. Catawba was able to tie the score at 42-42 at the 14:03 mark, but the Royals would again spurt out, this time gaining a 51-43 lead with 11:39 left. Locklear and Little then began to bring Catawba back as the duo scored 15 of the next 17 points for the Lady Indians to give Catawba a 60-55 edge with 6:05 remaining. A three-point play by Little with 7:13 to play gave Catawba the lead for good at 55-53. Queens went cold from long range in the closing minutes and Catawba hit on six of eight free throws in the final 3:51 to hold off the Royals. Locklear finished with 18 points, 16 coming in the last half, while Little added 15 points and eight rebounds. Leslie Olson (High Point, NC) led the way for Queens, scoring 17 points before fouling out in the closing seconds. #######
