Smith wins 13th straight decision as Baseball tops Mars Hill at SAC TournamentGREENEVILLE, TN -- Catawba sophomore David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) collected four hits as the top-seeded Indians defeated fourth-seeded Mars Hill 9-5 at the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park. Catawba, which improves to 42-11 on the season, remains in the winner's bracket, where it will face #2-seed Tusculum on Saturday night. Mars Hill slips to 30-26 and meets Carson-Newman.Catawba got on the board in the top of the third inning on a two-run homerun by Matt Smith, scoring Thomas, who had reached on his second double of the game. Mars Hill cut the deficit to 2-1 on a RBI double by John Quail (Boonsboro, MD), but the Tribe responded with a four run fifth to take control. Z
ach Evans (Greensboro, NC) led off the frame with a homer and Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) drove home Thomas on a groundout. The final two runs of the inning came on bases-loaded walks to Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) and Chad Baker (Jamestown, NC). Mars Hill got single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on a run-scoring double by Clarke Rollins and on a double play grounder. Catawba got RBI from Lefko and Baker in the seventh and Thomas capped his afternoon with a homerun in the eighth for a 9-3 edge.
Matt Russell (Chapel Hill, NC)hit a two-run homer for Mars Hill in its eight to make the score 9-5. He was 3-for-4 for the Lions in the contest. Quail had a pair of hits.
Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) also had a productive day at the plate with three hits to back Tribe starter Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC), who improved to 13-1. He allowed five runs on seven with four walks and five strikeouts over seven and a third innings. #####
