Baseball has senior night spoiled by Pfeiffer falling 7-5

SALISBURY, NC – Pfeiffer University spoiled senior night as the Falcons knocked off fifth-ranked Catawba 7-5 in baseball action Thursday night at Newman Park. Pfeiffer moves to 24-36 on the year. The Indians drop to 44-12. Catawba struck in the first as senior Mark Smith (Brown Summitt, NC) blasted a two-run shot for the early Tribe lead. A RBI-single from Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) in the home-half of the third gave the Indians a 3-0 lead. The Falcons would take advantage of two Indian errors in the fourth to score a pair as Justin Little (Charlotte, NC) doubled in Kyle Pugh (Asheboro, NC) and later scored as Ryan Brown (Concord, NC) reached on an error. Leading off the bottom of the fifth Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) smashed a solo-HR to center giving the Tribe a brief two-run cushion. Pfeiffer would take the lead in the sixth putting up a four-spot on Bryan Braxton’s (Hillsborough, NC) solo-HR, Ryan Brown’s RBI-single and Daniel Brown’s (Walnut Cove, NC) two-run double. Pugh would pick up a RBI on his sacrifice fly to center in the seventh, while the Indians would pick up the final run in the eighth on a groundout from David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC). Mike McClain (Stoney Creek, NC) picked up the win for the Falcons while Chris Dove (Burlington, NC) pitched the final inning and a third of shutout ball picking up the save. Blake Ketner (Kannapolis, NC) tallied the loss in his inning of work in relief. ######
