Men's Basketball cruises to win over Allen
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College got double-doubles from Alex Luyk (Madrid, SPAIN) and Terrence Hamilton (Dillon, SC) as the Indians cruised to an 89-62 win over visiting Allen University in menís basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The win improves the Indians to 7-1, while Allen falls to 4-11. Catawba returns to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting Johnson C. Smith in a key South Atlantic Regional match-up.Luyk, a 6-9 center, hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening five minutes to help Catawba to a 14-6 lead. Allen was within five at the mid-point of the half, but a 9-2 run, capped by a Luyk jumper in the lane with 7:41 left, pushed the Catawba edge to 29-17. The Indians went on to lead by as many as 23 points in the opening frame and took a 44-24 lead at the break. Luyk and Hamilton each had 12 points by the half.
Catawba went five minutes without a field goal to open the second half as the Yellow Jackets closed to within 49-36, but a three-pointer by B.J. Robertson (High Point, NC) helped Catawba build the lead back 20 with 12:29 left at 59-39. The Tribeís biggest margin was the final score.
Luyk tossed in a season-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds, while Hamilton added 19 points and 11 boards. Quentin Bryant (Badin, NC) added 10 points off the bench for the Tribe. Joel Brown (Miami, FL) led Allen with 15 points, while Darrell Pooler (Hartsville, SC) added 13, both off the bench. Catawba scored 32 points off 23 Allen turnovers, while holding the Yellow jackets to 30.3% shooting. Catawba shot 43.6% and hit on eight three-pointers.
