Five Earn All-America Baseball Honors from NCBWA
SALISBURY, NC -- Five members of the Catawba College baseball team have earned All-America recognition from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.Catcher Matt Smith (Brown Summit, NC) and designated hitter Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) were named to the second team, freshman outfielder Jerry Sands (Clayton, NC) was a third team pick, while sophomore pitcher Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, NC) and sophomore outfielder David Thomas (Winston-Salem, NC) were honorable mention selections.
Matt Smith hit .403 for the Tribe in 2006, while collecting 56 RBI and scoring 71 runs. He tied a school mark with 30 doubles and set career marks in doubles (70) and runs scored (208). Davis hit for a .317 average and led the team with 17 homers and 70 RBI. He set career marks in both home runs (54) and RBI (235).
Sands enjoyed a 25-game hitting streak during his first collegiate season. He batted .399 with 16 home runs and 65 RBI. Tim Smith set a school record with a 13-1 record and had a 4.08 ERA, while Thomas led the team in batting with a .413 average and stole 27 bases. He set school marks with 100 hits and 84 runs scored.
Catawba set a school record in wins, finishing the season with a 47-14 record. The Tribe was 10th in both the final NCBWA and ABCA polls.
