Women's Soccer opens new athletic season with win over Erskine
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College, ranked 14th in NCAA II, opened its 2006 women’s soccer season with a 2-0 win over visiting Erskine on Thursday night at Frock Field.
Freshmen Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD) and Julie Wilson (Norfolk, VA) scored the goals for Catawba. It also marked the opener for Erskine. The first half looked to be heading to a scoreless draw until Wilhelm collected a pass from Lauren Ebersole (Hagerstown, MD) and tallied the opening goal of the season with just three seconds remaining before the break. Wilson ran in from midfield and lofted a shot over Erskine keeper Katy Jackson (Lexington, SC) in the 68th minute for an insurance goal. Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC) made three saves off four Flying Fleet shots to post the shutout. Jackson had five saves for Erskine, before being relieved with 18 minutes left. Kelsy Lindsey (Gastonia, NC) had one save. Catawba Coach John Cullen stated the match in simple terms. Job Done. There is much room for improvement.
