Fisher runs for three scores as Football tops Winston-Salem 21-7
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College opened its 2006 football season with a 21-7 win over visiting Winston-Salem State on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.
Catawba junior running back Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC) ran for three scores to lead the Tribe to a win in the first home night game for Catawba since 1974.Winston-Salem State took the early lead, marching 65 yards in 10 plays on the initial drive of the game to go on top 7-0. The Rams covered the distance all on the ground and the series was capped by a one-yard run by Tionti Powell (Beaulaville, SC).
Catawba would get its first score early in the second quarter as Fisher carried in from four-yards out. The point-after attempt failed and WSSU kept the 7-6 lead to the half. Late in the third quarter,
Catawba quarterback Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) hit on two pass plays to ignite the offense.
Antwan Strong (Charlotte, NC) made a leaping catch for a 39-yard play to the Ram 25 and Daniel Granzyk (Hamptonville, NC) followed with a 23-yard gain to the WSSU two-yard-line. Fisher would take it the final two yards and a Roach’s two-point conversion pass to Joe Mitchell (Tallahassee, FL) gave Catawba a 14-7 lead with 2:42 to go in the third quarter. Catawba came right back on its next possession.
Roach hooked up with Lance Johnson (Hickory, NC) for a 24-yards pass to the Ram one and Fisher ran in on the next play for a 21-7 advantage with 12:41 remaining. The Tribe defense made two key stops in the final 10 minutes as Trey Glover (Spartanburg, SC) had an interception and the unit held the Rams on downs inside the Catawba 20 with a minute to play.
Fisher ran for only 57 yards, but did have the three scores. Roach went 18-of-26 through the air for 241 yards. Johnson had four catches for 57 yards and totaled 64 yards on a pair of punt returns. Strong also had four grabs for 63 yards.
Powell led the Ram rushing attack with 59 yards on 13 carries. Winston-Salem had 165 yards rushing to just 51 for Catawba, but completed only two of eight passes for 14 yards. Box Score #####
