Blackwelder's goal lifts Women's Soccer to win over Barton
CARY, NC -- Sophomore Nikki Blackwelder (Asheville, NC) scored in the 75th minute to lift 14th-ranked Catawba to a 1-0 win over Barton in the Sleep Inn Women’s Soccer Classic on Saturday afternoon at SAS Soccer Park.
Catawba improves to 2-0, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-1. Mount Olive defeated Southern Virginia 5-0 in the other contest. Catawba out-shot Barton 18-5, but could not get on the scoreboard until Kim Crowley’s (Glendale, AZ) corner kick set up Blackwelder with the game’s only goal at the 74:15 mark.
Leigh Telzrow (Dallas, TX) had the assist. Barton goalkeeper Ashley Gregory recorded 13 saves, while Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC) finished with four saves for Catawba and posted her second straight shutout.
“I thought it was a much better effort than we had in our opener,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. “I feel things are headed in the right direction. We were the dominate side for the entire match.” The start of the tournament, being hosted by Mount Olive College, was pushed back a day and the match was moved to Cary due to adverse field conditions at Trojan Field caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto.
