Women's Soccer gets record fourth shutout to open season
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba scored a pair of second half goals as the 20th-ranked lady Indians defeated visiting Limestone 2-0 in women’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field.
The win was the fourth straight shutout for Catawba, marking the first time in school history the team has opened the season with four straight clean sheets. Catawba improves to 4-0, while the Saints fall to 1-2-3. Catawba held Limestone without a shot in the opening half, but could not find the back of the net until the 52nd minute when freshman Alexandra Beshk (Mission Viejo, CA) raced onto a pass from Lainey Nichols (Frederick, MD) for the 1-0 edge.
Catawba iced the game in the 85th minute as Saint keeper Liz Eichhorn (Fort Collins, CO) was unable to keep a Nikki Blackwelder (Asheville, NC) header from crossing the line. Catawba held a 21-3 edge in shots with Chelsea Binder (Woodstock, MD) and Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC) combining for the shutout. Blake had the only save. Eichhorn had eight saves for Limestone. I thought we did a great job of being patient in the first half, stated Catawba Coach John Cullen.
We stepped it up in the second half and the freshman came through again.
