Football Coach David Bennett to Leave Catawba College

Catawba College officials learned Thursday that Head Football Coach David Bennett has decided to leave his position in Salisbury and accept a position as head football coach at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C.  Catawba College officials issued the following statements:

Catawba College President J. Fred Corriher, Jr. -

“Catawba College gave David Bennett an opportunity to become successful and he has now parlayed that success into a career opportunity.  We are grateful for the great things he has done for the Catawba College football program and we wish him and his family well in the future.”
Catawba College Senior Vice President Tom Childress –

“The trustees and administration have worked hard to keep Coach Bennett at Catawba but we understand Coastal is offering him a professional advancement to Division I-AA.  We at Catawba wish him only the very best while we will continue to work toward now keeping Catawba College as one of the premier football powers in NCAA Division II.”

Catawba College Director of Athletics Dennis Davidson –

“While we are saddened by the departure of one of the most respected young football coaches in America, we also understand that this is the nature of this business.  Of course, we hoped that coach Bennett would always be here, but it is hard to hold onto a rising star.  When it came down to it, I believe that it was the Division I opportunity, not money, that attracted him to Coastal Carolina.

Coach Bennett is a caring individual and this decision ripped his heart out.  As he embarks on a new journey, Catawba will continue a journey that began in 1907.  We are about to move into a new and exciting era of Catawba football – a young, playoff-tested team in a new Shuford Stadium.  Next fall should still be very exciting for our fans, watching the Indians attempt to move past the national semifinals and into the NCAA Division II championship game.

We plan to move quickly and turn the football program over to an outstanding coach and a man of high character.  We want to see all phases of the program continue – recruit good kids who become great citizens and students, who are involved in community service and learn how to play winning football.”
