Women's Soccer gets shutout 1-0 by Armstrong Atlantic
SALISBURY, NC -- Armstrong Atlantic got an early goal from Kristin Burton (Ocala, FL) and made it stand up in a 1-0 win over 20th-ranked Catawba in women’s soccer action on Tuesday night at Frock Field.
The Pirates improve to 5-1 with the win, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-1.Burton dribbled down the left side on a breakaway in the 11th minute and beat Catawba keeper Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC) to the near post. Samantha Held (Green Cove Springs, FL) made the goal stand up turning back three of Catawba’s eight shots to register the shutout. The Pirates held a 23-8 edge in shots. Blake had nine saves for Catawba, including a diving stop off a free kick just outside the box in the closing minutes of the first half.
"I was pleased with our effort and energy in the second half," stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. "We didn't show that in the first half. I give credit to Armstrong Atlantic, they came in here and took it to us and it took 45 minutes for us to respond. We need to learn to start games quicker."
