Football uses six turnovers to top Virginia State 31-13
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba used a strong first half and went on to defeat visiting Virginia State 31-13 in football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.
With the win, the 21st-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 3-0, while the Trojans fall to 0-3. The Tribe used a 15-play drive that covered 75 yards and ate up half of the first quarter to grab a 7-0 lead on a one-yard run by Trevor Steele (Asheville, NC) at the 7:16 mark. Turnovers would begin to plague the Trojans from there. Virginia State fumbled on its first play from scrimmage and Catawba’s Gerard Smith (Salisbury, NC) recovered near midfield.
Five plays later Brad Roach (Williamston, NC) tossed a 22-yard pass to Joe Mitchell (Tallahassee, FL) for a 14-0 lead with 4:22 to go in the opening quarter. Devon Wiggins (Norfolk, VA) intercepted Roach late in the first quarter, but the Trojans fumbled back to Catawba, leading to a seven-yard run by Kory Fisher (New Bern, NC).
The score put Catawba on top 21-0 with 11:23 remaining in the half. Virginia State staved off another scoring chance by Catawba after a fumble at its own 15, when Catawba fumbled back at the goal line. The Trojans would fumble yet again a few plays later and Roach tossed a 17-yard pass to Brent Johnson (Hickory, NC) for a 28-0 edge at the break. Wiggins returned the second half kickoff 51 yards to the Catawba 30 and Ricky Brown (Suffolk, VA) put the Trojans on the board with a 19-yard run just 1:18 into the final half. Virginia State would drive deep into Catawba territory on its next possession, but Ron Ellington (Charlotte, NC) picked off Michael Terry (Charlottesville, VA) in the end zone. DJ Gill (Orlando, FL) provided Catawba with its only points of the second half with a 40-yard field goal with 4:22 left in the third quarter. The Trojans would add the final points on the last play of the game as Terry threw a 12-yard pass to Jarryd Hasty (Chesapeake, VA) for the final margin. Roach led Catawba, passing for 225 yards and two scores as he completed 22 of 39 attempts.
Johnson had seven catches for 90 yards. Fisher led the rushers with 58 yards. Terry ran for 33 yards to pace the Trojans and completed 11 of 27 passes for 126 yards. Davian Richards (Orlando, FL) had eight grabs for 65 yards. Virginia State had 227 yards of offense to 299 for Catawba, but had six turnovers to just two for Catawba. Box Score #####
