Telzrow's late goal gives Women's Soccer tie with Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got a goal just over a minute from the end of regulation play to earn a 1-1 tie with visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field.
The Catawba Indians, ranked 20th in NCAA II, improve to 5-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 4-3-1 and 0-1-1. Newberry got on the board first after drawing a penalty kick.
Brooke Tumblin (Florence, SC) took a shot that was blocked by a Catawba defender and as the two players pursued the ball, bounding outside the penalty box, Tumblin was pushed down to draw the foul. Inga Woiwode (El Paso, TX) stepped up and made the penalty kick in the 16th minute for the 1-0 lead.
Catawba had a goal late in the first half off a corner kick called back for a foul against the goalkeeper and another early in the second half off an apparent hand ball. Catawba would finally break through near the end of regulation as Leigh Telzrow (Dallas, TX) scored at the 88:48 mark. Neither team could find the net in the overtime periods.
