Burman scores twice as Women's Soccer tops Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, NC -- Senior McKenzie Burman (Rolesville, NC) scored a pair of goals as Catawba earned a 3-2 win over host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field.
Catawba ups its record to 8-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 2-7-1 and 0-4. Burman scored the first two goals of the match and helped Catawba to a 3-0 lead at the break. In the 25th minute, Burman shook off a Bear defender and scored from the right side and made it 2-0 at the 33:47 mark when she received a throw-in from Alexandra Beshk (Mission Viejo, CA), spun, and placed the ball into the back of the net.
The Catawba Indians’ Leigh Telzrow (Dallas, TX) scored five minutes before the half, taking a pass in front of the net from Kim Crowley (Glendale, AZ.). The score remained 3-0 until the 80th minute when the Bears finally got on the board.
Tara Learn (Charleston, SC) scored from 20 yards out off an indirect kick. Learn then assisted on L-R’s second goal with just 1:06 minutes remaining in the match when she crossed it to Blair Whaley (Raleigh, NC), who headed the ball in for the score.
“I was very, very pleased with the first half,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. “We dominated the opening half. We need to learn to finish games at the end.”
