Career-high 27 kills by Powers lifts Volleyball to win over Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba got a career-high 27 kills from sophomore Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC) and outlasted Tusculum to earn a four-game win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym.
The Catawba Indians improve to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the SAC with the 30-26, 30-21, 28-30 and 30-19 win. The Pioneers fall to 15-5 and 4-2. Midway through the opening game, Powers broke a 17-17 tie with consecutive kills and Catawba never trailed again in the game. Powers would kill off the final point of the game. Catawba got out to a quick lead in game two, getting a pair of kills from Powers and Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC) to go up 5-1. The Pioneers rolled out to an 11-4 lead, aided by consecutive kills by Cadenhead. Tusculum got a pair of kills from Cadenhead and a kill and block from Vivian Lacy (Lacey, WA) to take back a 25-23 advantage.
With the game tied at 27-27, a Tribe error and a kill by Heather MacArthur (Salt Lake City, UT) pushed the Pioneers to match point and another error by Catawba ended the game. In game four, Catawba used a 6-2 run, including a pair of blocks from setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC), to take a 14-11 lead.
Tusculum pulled within 14-13, but an ace by Henderson and two kills by Collier built the advantage to 17-13. Two kills each from Powers and Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) helped out in a seven-point run that put Catawba up 24-14 and keyed the win in the deciding game. Powers added seven blocks to her 27 kills, while Griffith had 21 kills and 16 digs for Catawba.
Collier produced 15 kills in 23 swings with one error. Henderson had 69 assists and added three aces and a pair of blocks. Tusculum was led by Lacy, who had 21 kills. Cadenhead had 13 kills and 12 digs, while Alexis Rowles (Simpsonville, SC) posted 32 digs.
