Late rally lifts Women's Basketball over Albany State

MORROW, GA -- The Catawba College women rallied from a late eight-point deficit and nipped Albany State 68-66 in consolation game of the Arrowhead Clinic Classic at Clayton State College and University on Saturday afternoon. The win improves Catawba to 8-2, while the Golden Rams fall to 3-5.Catawba opened the game with a pair of technical free throws by Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) after Albany failed to report its starters by the designated time. The Lady Indians would score the first eight points, four each by Locklear and Ella Pasola (Vantaa, FINLAND). The duo would combine for the first 14 points until a three-pointer by Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) put Catawba up 17-10 at the 15:13 mark. The Lady Indians would lead by 11 in the opening frame, but saw Albany State go on an 11-2 run to close within 25-23 at the 7:32 mark. Catawba would spurt back out by seven, but the Golden Rams scored the final five points of the half to trail only 33-31 at the break. Albany would take the lead early in the second half and twice built leads of eight points. Trailing 61-53 with under four minutes to play, Catawba got a spark by Desiree Pugh (Norlina, NC), who scored eight of her 12 points in the final 3:40. A basket by Pugh and a steal and three-point play by freshman Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) brought Catawba to within 61-58 and a layin by Locklear at the 3:20 mark made the scored 61- 60. Charris Hill converted a free throw for Albany State, but Pugh answered to tie the game at 62-62 with 1:57 left. Pugh would again tie the score at 64-64 with 1:30 left after two Golden Ram free throws. Pugh failed to convert the three-point play, but Locklear rebounded the miss and put Catawba on top at 66-64. Albany got two free throws by Shernika Powell with 1:09 left, but Pugh scored the winning basket with 1:02 to play. Locklear recorded a key block on the next Golden Ram possession and rebounded a miss free throw by Cox with seven seconds left. Locklear missed her free throw, but made a steal at mid-court to seal the win. Locklear matched her career-high with 23 points and added nine rebounds, earning all-tournament honors. Pugh and Cox each added 12 points, while Pasola scored 10. Cox had eight assists. Pamela Butler led Albany with 10 points. #######
