Volleyball sweeps past Carson-Newman
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept visiting Carson-Newman in three games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Catawba claims its fourth straight victory and improves to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the SAC, winning by the scores of 30-24, 30-16 and 30-25.
The Lady Eagles fall to 9-9 and 2-5. Catawba jumped out quickly, taking a 10-3 lead in the opening game. Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) had four kills in the early action, while Nikki Bozick (Boca Raton, FL) served six points, including an ace. Carson-Newman trailed 18-12, but Kelli Sorensen (Maple Grove, MN) had three kills in a run that brought the Lady Eagles to within 22-21.
Catawba was able to regroup and got three kills down the stretch from Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) to end the game. Another early run keyed Catawba’s game-two win. Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC) served eight straight points with three aces for a quick 10-1 lead.
Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC) had five kills and a pair of blocks in the game for Catawba. Catawba got off to a 9-3 lead in the deciding game as Griffith collected three early kills. Catawba led 19-9 before Carson-Newman came to life behind the serving of Melissa Miller (Springfield, OH). Miller keyed a five-point run with a pair of aces and the Lady Eagles would eventually pull within 20-17. That would be as close as CN would come as Catawba won seven of the next 10 points to lead 27-20. Griffith paced Catawba with 15 kills, while Powers added 15 kills and four blocks. Setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) had 42 assists with five kills and eight digs. Sorensen collected 13 kills for the Lady Eagles, while Haley Bush (Spartanburg, SC) led the team with 21 digs.
