Blake's 10 saves shuts out Wingate as Women's Soccer takes 1-0 win
WINGATE, NC -- Freshman Julie Wilson (Norfolk, VA) tallied the lone goal of the match in the 68th minute to lead the Catawba Indians to a 1-0 win over host Wingate in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday night at WU Soccer Complex.
With the road victory, Catawba improves to 9-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs drop their first home game of the 2006 season after six wins. After a scoreless first half, Catawba stepped up its offensive pressure in the second stanza. The Catawba Indians took only one shot in the initial 45 minutes, a nice look by McKenzie Burman (Rolesville, NC), but outshot Wingate 8-4 in the second half.
On the match-winner, Wilson took a feed from junior midfielder Lindsay Hinkle (Highland, MD) and threaded the needle between the right post and keeper Kathryn Smith (Indian Trail, NC). Wilson leads Catawba with four goals this season. Wingate did hold the edge in shots, 12-11. Smith had seven saves for the Bulldogs.
Catawba junior netminder Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC) recorded 10 saves for the visitors and recorded her fourth shutout on the season. The Bulldogs had six shots on goal, including three by Lisa Service (Omagh, N. IRELAND). Wingate’s best chance in the opening frame was a point blank shot by freshman forward Madi Welch (Monroe, NC) in the 33rd minute. “It was a terrific performance on the road,” stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. “To get another road win, especially against a team undefeated at home was outstanding.”
