Football falls just short in 21-14 loss to #18 Newberry

NEWBERRY, SC – Newberry’s Alex Haynes scored from two-yards out with 1:49 to play as the 18th-ranked Indians held off an upset bid from visiting Catawba for a 21-14 win in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday night at Setzler Field.

Newberry remains atop the league standings, improving to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-2 and 0-2.The teams played to a 7-7 tie in the first half, but Newberry marched 89 yards with the opening possession of the second half to take a 14-7 edge. Josh Stepp passed to Gannon Mozeak from 10-yards out for the score.

Catawba answered the score early in the fourth quarter as Lance Johnson caught a 23-yard pass from Brad Roach on fourth down with 13:32 remaining. Catawba held Newberry on its next possession, but Roach was intercepted at midfield by Derrell Mills. Two runs by Cory Small got Newberry to the Tribe 28, but he fumbled on the next play to end the threat. Catawba was unable to move the ball and a short punt gave Newberry the ball back at the Tribe 45. Haynes ran for two big gains to the 16-yard line which was followed by a pass interference call in the end zone. Haynes scored on the next play for the winning score.

Catawba drove the Newberry 14 in the closing seconds, but Roach misfired on the final two plays. Newberry cashed in early in the first quarter to grab the lead. Catawba fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Newberry wasted little time, marching 34 yards and scoring on a one-yard run on fourth down by Smalls.

Lance Johnson got Catawba right back in the game as he returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to the Newberry 39. Two third down penalties kept the Catawba drive alive and Roach capped the march with a five-yard pass to Daniel Granzyk. Haynes ran for 162 yards to pace the Newberry offense. Stepp was 12-of-23 through the air for 123 yards.

Tymere Zimmerman was limited to just two catches for five yards with Kelton Tendall leading the way with four catches for 53 yards.
