Volleyball drops match in three games to league-leading Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Wingate seniors Rebecca Brezovec (Durham, NC), Lauren Alley (Bristol, TN) and Molly Kerns (Bellefontaine, OH all recorded double-digit kills as the host Bulldogs defeated Catawba College 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-23) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night in Cuddy Arena.
Wingate improves to 19-4 overall and 10-0 in the SAC. Catawba is 12-9 and 7-3. Brezovec had 12 kills, while Alley and Kerns notched 10 kills each. Kerns led all blockers with four blocks (one solo, three assists).
Bulldog libero Danielle Thompson (Channelview, TX) registered a match-high 20 digs, while setter Melissa Deluca (Bahama, NC) contributed 45 assists and 13 digs. In game one, Wingate turned a 10-6 deficit into an 18-12 advantage, thanks to three kills and one block solo by Kerns.
Catawba pulled within one on two occasions, but could get no closer. Brezovec had five kills and a service ace in the second game, as the hosts built a 15-7 advantage midway through the frame. Wingate never trailed in game two, as Kerns provided much support with four kills. The third game was nip-and-tuck, but Wingate pulled away for the 30-23 victory. Alley helped put the exclamation point on the match, as she recorded three kills among Wingate’s final five points. For Catawba, Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) barely missed joining Deluca in the double-double club with 17 kills and nine digs. Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC) added nine kills.
Setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) had 38 assists and seven digs, while libero Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) contributed a team-high 19 digs for the visitors. #####
