Burman's tally lifts Women's Soccer to win over #10 Columbus St.
SALISBURY, NC -- Senior McKenzie Burman (Rolesville, NC) scored the lone goal as the host Catawba Indians knocked off 10th-ranked Columbus State 1-0 in women’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field.
Catawba improve to 10-2-2, while the Lady Cougars fall to 14-2 and see a 12-match winning streak come to an end.Columbus State had the best opportunity of the first half, but Gina Goforth (Fayetteville, NC) had a shot from 10 yards out saved by Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC) at the near post.
The match remained scoreless until just past the hour when Burman headed home a cross from freshman Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD). Burman’s goal marked her fourth tally of the season to tie the senior for team-high honors. Wilhelm delivered her second assist of the campaign. Blake made five saves in goal for Catawba to notch her fifth shutout. Monica Sanchez (Riverview, FL) also had five saves for Columbus State. It was a great win on a great goal, stated Catawba Coach John Cullen. Our concentration level for the match was outstanding. We challenged the girls to beat a nationally ranked team to show that we have a national caliber program at Catawba.
