Women's Soccer battles #3 Tusculum to scoreless draw
GREENEVILLE, TN -- Tusculum College and Catawba College played to a scoreless draw Saturday night at Pioneer Field in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action.
The host Pioneers, ranked third in NCAA Division II, now stand at 10-0-3 overall and 4-0-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians post a second consecutive positive result against a nationally-ranked opponent and are 10-2-3 and 3-1-2. This result marks the second straight year that Tusculum and Catawba have finished the match in a scoreless deadlock during the regular season. Tusculum keeper Whitney Wardrop posted her eighth shutout of the season, while Catawba's Kathleen Blake recorded her sixth clean-sheet of the year.
Wardrop and Blake each accounted for seven saves for their respective teams. Catawba out-shot the Pioneers 23-13 on the night, including 10-2 in the two overtime periods.
Catawba's Alexandra Beshk and Tasha Wilhelm tallied six shots each, while Tusculum's Kelly Barron also fired six shots on the evening. “I am very proud of our team,” said Catawba Coach John Cullen. “We played two top ten teams in the country and held each of them scoreless. We gave the #3 team (Tusculum) a good game. I feel we are heading in the right direction.”
