Women's Basketball rallies for another win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final four minutes to defeat visiting Lenoir-Rhyne 87-84 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Desiree Pugh’s (Norlina, NC) layup with 11 seconds left was the game-winner. The win was the 18th in a row at home for the Lady Indians, improving Catawba to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 10-3 and 0-1.Catawba got double-doubles from Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) and Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) to offset a career-high 34 point performance by L-R’s Sally Logan (Vale, NC). The sophomore equaled a school record, hitting on seven three-pointers in eight tries. Little had a career-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds, while Locklear had 18 points and 11 boards. The Lady Indians jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, but Lenoir-Rhyne would control much of the game. Down 8-2, Logan hit back-to-back three’s and added two free throws to knot the score at 10-10. From there, the Bears would build a 33-23 edge and led by seven at the break. Catawba scored eight straight points to open the second half to grab a 44-43 lead. The Lady Indians would gain its biggest lead at 63-57 with 10:05 left, but L-R would fight back to take a 84-77 lead on three free throws by Logan with 3:43 remaining. The Lady Indians got consecutive layups by Locklear and Little and two free throws by Kendall Prescott (Exeter, NH) to cut the margin to 84-83 with 2:35 left. Catawba had several chances to take the lead, but Locklear missed inside, Pugh failed to convert a layin and Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) missed the front end of a one-&-one with 22 seconds left. Following a timeout, Catawba stole the inbounds pass and Pugh made a layup with 11 seconds to go. L-R had one final chance, but Locklear blocked Ebony Orr’s (Charlotte, NC) attempt with five seconds to play. After shooting 35% in the first half, Catawba hit on 56% in the final half. L-R connected on a school record 12 three-pointers in 24 tries. Cox dished out a career-high 11 assists for Catawba, while Prescott added career-highs with 19 points and nine rebounds. Orr had a career-high 10 assists for L-R. Also for the Bears, Amber Hanks (Pulaski, VA) had 15 points, while freshman Shea Blacknell (Chapel Hill, NC) added a career-high 11 points and eight rebounds. #######
