Wilson nets team-leding fifth goal, but Women's Soccer falls to Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, NC -- Pfeiffer scored a pair of first half goals and held on to defeat host Catawba 2-1 in women’s soccer action on Wednesday night at Frock Field. The Falcons improve to 15-3 with the win, while the Catawba Indians, ranked 22nd in NCAA II, fall to 10-3-3.
Pfeiffer jumped out quickly as Laura Crews (Greensboro, NC) broke in alone on Catawba keeper Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC). Crews drew out Blake, made a dribble to the left and scored into the empty net in the 12th minute.
Catawba was awarded a penalty kick at the 20 minute mark, but McKenzie Burman (Rolesville, NC) hit the post. A rebound attempt by Tasha Wilhelm (Mt. Savage, MD) was saved and a final shot by Carrie Wollaston (Landenberg, PA) went wide. Two minutes later Pfeiffer took a 2-0 lead off a free kick. Maria Reis (Akron, OH) drove a kick from 40 yards out that looked to be headed into the top corner. Blake knocked the shot down, but it fell to the foot of Megan Blevins (Copley, OH) at the goal line, who tapped it home for a 2-0 edge. Pfeiffer began to retreat into defensive mode from their and kept the two-goal advantage until the final ten minutes.
Julie Wilson (Norfolk, VA) gave Catawba life with her tally with nine minutes left. Catawba’s best chance to tie came three minutes later off a corner kick, but Alexandra Beshk’s (Mission Viejo, CA) header was over the crossbar. Pfeiffer keeper Jennifer Lindow (Copley, OH) made 10 saves.
