Men's Basketball victorious in SAC opener
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College hit on 60% of its second half attempts and defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 87-78 in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 2-11 and 0-1.Junior Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) led four Indians in double figures with a game-high 20 points. He hit on 8-of-11 shots, including three from long range. Terrence Hamilton (Dillon, SC) added 14 points, while Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) and Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA) each had a dozen. Roman Davis (Walnut Cove, NC) led Lenoir-Rhyne with 14 points off the bench, while Jake Orr (Blowing Rock, NC) added 13, Ryan Pitts (Baltimore, MD) 12 and Randy Mauldin (Albemarle, NC) had 11.
Lenoir-Rhyne hung close in a tight first half that saw three ties and 11 lead changes. The Bears hit on nearly 60% of its shots in the first half and were near 70% for much of the half. Catawba began to take control midway through the final half. Tied at 48-48, the Indians scored nine straight to grab a 57-48 edge with 11:01 to play.
Catawba would build its lead to double figures and led 74-56 with 6:40 remaining. Lenoir-Rhyne was able to trim the deficit to nine thanks in part to Catawba’s poor free throw shooting. The Tribe hit just 16-of-35 tries in the second half and were just 8-of-22 in the final five minutes.
