Volleyball secures third place league finish with sweep of Carson-NewmanJEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba swept past host Carson-Newman in three games in South Atlantic Conference Volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse. The Catawba Indians improve to 17-11 overall and 11-3 in the SAC, while the Lady Eagles fall to 16-14 and 5-9.
Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA) led Catawba with 14 kills, while Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) added 13 kills and three blocks. Setter Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) contributed 42 assists and libero Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) had 11 digs. Kelli Sorensen's 10 digs and Kelsey Fleck added 10 kills for Carson-Newmanm while Kari Gibson added 26 assists, six kills, one ace, five digs, and one block.
Catawba held a 21-20 lead in the opening game when Griffith had a pair of kills in a run to push the lead to 25-20 and give the Tribe the edge. Catawba pulled away from a 13-13 tie in game two with a seven-point run behind the serving of Nikki Bozick (Boca Raton, FL).
The Lady Eagles fought back within 26-25, but Mai Zoua Lo (Hickory, NC) killed off a point and Griffith the final two for the game win. Catawba got off to an early 10-5 lead in the final game and kept a comfortable lead from there.
